研究内容

日本列島を始めとする各地の沈み込み帯について、地下温度構造と熱輸送過程に関する研究を行っている。

岩石の物理的・化学的な性質は温度によって大きく変化する。このため、沈み込み帯における諸過程(地震活動、地殻の変形・流動、火成活動、変成作用等)は温度構造と密接に関係しており、例えばプレート境界で発生する巨大地震の震源域の広がりも、温度に強く支配されると考えられる。

現在の主な研究対象は、日本海溝(東北日本)及び南海トラフ(西南日本)沈み込み帯であり、海域を中心とした熱流量(地表面から流出する熱量)の測定と、それに基づく地下温度構造の推定を行っている。なかでも、日本海溝海側の太平洋プレート上や南海トラフにおける熱流量分布と、沈み込む海洋地殻の構造の関係に着目している。いずれの地域でも、地殻内の流体循環による熱輸送が重要と考えられ、観測に加えて、流体流動を考慮したモデル計算を行うことで、沈み込み帯の温度構造を解明しようとしている。流体の分布や温度構造を明らかにするには、他の手法による情報も必要であり、電磁気や地震波による構造探査等の研究者と共同研究を行っている。さらに、海洋地殻の破砕や水の浸入など、海溝海側で生じるさまざまな過程とその沈み込み境界への影響について、岩石学・地球化学等も含む総合的な研究を進めている。
